Why I Prefer Studio Maternity

First thing first, I will always choose studio photography over outdoors no matter the session. When shooting indoors, and being familiar with my own studio, it allows me to always be 100% in control. Not to mention that a very pregnant mama would surely prefer some nice air conditioning or heating if she’s due in the middle of summer or winter. Also, I am able to design and brand my photography business accordingly when I am in full control of the conditions, lighting, and wardrobe. My maternity clients are always welcome to bring their own outfits, but besides the fact of offering a luxury service, the next benefit of having a client closet is I am able to hand select what pieces, colors, and specific gowns to photograph. Doing so also helps when reflecting my brand. If you see below, this maternity client is wearing a gown that is almost completely see through. Due to knowing my studio well, equipment, and where to exactly place my lighting, I am able to make this pregnancy photo absolutely gorgeous. Trying to photography such a photo outdoors would result in a completely different look, that would most likely not be so flattering with this outfit.

Knowing photoshop is a must when being an indoor maternity photographer. By not learning photoshop, you are hindering yourself and your business. Photoshop allows 100 different creative approaches to your RAW images, unlike Lightroom. For example, if look below you will notice many different things.

The backdrop is cut off and showing all the wrinkles and indentions, the strobe stand is in the way, lighting isn’t as flattering as I prefer, and momma isn’t popping from the image like I prefer. Since I used a solid white backdrop, I was also able to create extra depth in the image by having the pregnant mom stand about 7-8 feet away from the backdrop. This creates an ombre look as the lighting is hitting her and allowing the backdrop behind her to slowly fade into the shadows. By doing so, this is the first step to really have your subject POP and stand out.

Knowing my specific techniques and equipment allows me to still be in full control. Whether it is completely dark outside, it’s high noon, or whatever else, I can always get a consistent look by knowing my gear and shooting in my studio. Not to mention I never have to worry about rescheduling due to weather conditions, mosquito bites, a pregnant mom sweating her makeup off, or anyones fingers or ears turning blood red from the cold.
