Why is photography so costly?
Have you ever heard the phrase, “In search of a photographer who doesn’t cost an arm and a leg?”
You probably have the same general questions about photography like the rest of the public, “why is photography so expensive?” or “why do photographers charge so much?”
Well, to break it down sweet and simple, full time photographers are very serious about our jobs and work. We spend dozens of hours on just one single session. So many people don’t think about it, but the time we spend reading your inquiry, communicating and prepping, driving to site, spending that time with you photographing, driving back from the site, uploading your images, exporting to our work space, THEN taking the time to work and finalize your images… ya, it’s a lot.
Let’s not forget to mention the expense of our equipment and props. For my camera body alone, I purchased it for $2,000. My lens I use for newborn photography is $400. The memory card within my camera is $200. My lighting system I use it right under $1,000. For the average amount of props I use in each newborn session, it averages to about $500. Total those basic expenses up, you’re looking at over $4,000 just to photograph your newborn! I also have to go home and edit, the average amount of my equipment at home (desktop, laptop, external hard drives, editing applications, photoshop tools for newborn photography) is about another $3,000.
But seriously, I love my job. Not very many people can say that either. Just the photographer community alone has given me SO MANY amazing people in my life now. I have grown as a creative, and as a better person. I truly don’t want to see myself doing anything in the future except being a photographer. Especially a newborn and maternity photographer! There’s just something about meeting new people, learning and sharing our personal lives and interests when meeting, and seeing the faces of my clients when I present them with their final images. I truly have such an amazing life working in the photography industry.
But enough about me and back to the basics; photography is a real job, just like anything else. We deserve a paycheck, a working car, a substantial home, and good leisure. Hobby photographers have almost ruined the photography industry. So many people believe that photography isn’t a real, or hard working job. It’s all of that and so much more. Running a business is HARD! But it’s not just the working, constant client communication, customer service, or being your own CEO- it’s the waking up and not being able to call off, the burnout, loss of creativity, and self discipline that’s hard. Those are things that just makes photographer’s time even more valuable- that is why we charge our worth.
